In the inaugural January 1948 issue of PEDIATRICS, the editor, Hugh McCulloch, articulated the journals vision: "The content of the journal is... intended to encompass the needs of the whole child in his physiologic, mental, emotional, and social structure. The single word, PEDIATRICS, has been chosen to indicate this catholic intent. "PEDIATRICS continues this legacy, publishing original research, clinical observations, and special feature articles in the field of pediatrics, as broadly defined. Contributions pertinent to pediatrics are also included from related fields such as nutrition, surgery, dentistry, public health, child health services, human genetics, basic sciences, psychology, psychiatry, education, sociology, and nursing. PEDIATRICS serves authors and readers of the general medical profession as well as pediatricians. The Executive Board and officers of the American Academy of Pediatrics have delegated to the Editor and Associate Editor the selection of articles appearing in PEDIATRICS. Statements and opinions expressed in such articles are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the American Academyof Pediatrics, its Committees, the Editors, or Editorial Board of PEDIATRICS. JAMA is the most widely circulated medical journal in the world. The online version is made freely available to institutions in developing countries. JAMAs 2011 impact factor is 30 (the impact factor is a measure of citation rate per article, and is calculated by dividing 1 years worth of citations to a journals articles published in the previous 2 years by the number of major articles [eg, research papers, reviews] published by that journal in those 2 years). JAMAs acceptance rate is approximately 9% of the nearly 6000 solicited and unsolicited manuscripts it receives annually. In 2011, the median time from submission to acceptance for all articles was 42 days and, for Online First articles, 17 days. The median time from acceptance to publication was 33 days for all articles and 18 days for articles published Online First (for additional information, see the JAMA editorial).
